Facebook parent Meta conducted its biggest-ever layoffs last November, shedding about 11,000 workers. But more jobs, it appears, are about to be axed.
CEO Mark Zuckerberg noted in a Facebook post on Feb. 1, โWe closed last year with some difficult layoffs and restructuring some teams. When we did this, I said clearly that this was the beginning of our focus on efficiency and not the end.โ During an earnings call that same day, he announced 2023 will be Metaโs โyear of efficiency.โ
โHonestly, itโs still a mess,โ one employee told the FT. โThe year of efficiency is kicking off with a bunch of people getting paid to do nothing.โ
A lot of corporate America, tech and non tech, is chock full of people like that. People who are paid six figures to attend meetings but who are not involved in any way to produce anything of value. They were the majority at Twitter. Many were so arrogant that they quit their jobs, expecting another large corp. to hire them for even more pay. They didn’t even bother to wait until they had a job offer before they quit.
We are moving from the Great Resignation to the Great Firing. And most of these people are even more up to their eyeballs in debt than Stanley Johnson. And they have no marketable skills.
