China’s construction projects are known for their speed but struggle to ensure quality, and have produced many buildings referred to as tofu-dreg projects. They include projects that have either tampered with the design, cut corners, or used inferior materials. How come the non-compliant buildings are accepted and delivered? Because there are just too many opportunities for corruption in these projects. As a result, the construction sector has been one of the most corrupt industries in China, and it’s a problem that the current Chinese government is completely unable to solve.

  2. Bed Bath & Beyond — one of the original big-box retailers known for its seemingly endless offerings of sheets, towels and kitchen gadgets — filed for bankruptcy protection after years of dismal sales and losses and numerous failed turnaround plans.

The beleaguered home goods chain made the filing Sunday in U.S. District Court in New Jersey and said it will start an orderly wind down of its operations while seeking a buyer for all or some of its businesses. In the bankruptcy filing, the retailer said it anticipates closing all of its stores by June 30.

For now, the company’s 360 Bed Bath & Beyond stores and its 120 Buy Buy Baby sites as well as its websites will remain open to serve customers.

  4. DeJeebus:

In the absence of comprehensive testing or ventilation, some students are trying to reduce their risk of infection by masking in public. DeJesus is one of the only students who still wears a mask in her classes.

“It makes me feel a little crazy,” she says. “Even though I know that I’m not. Even though I’ve done public health research, even though I’ve read the data, even though I understand why I do it, I sit there in a class called ‘Global Inequality.’ And no one except me is wearing a mask.”

DeJesus’ experience is not unique. Every student who still wears a mask in class that we talked to says they are the only one, or one of few.

      1. They should look at the Worldometer’s website. The US numbers are now so low that they are little more than noise.
