A report from WUFS. “Last Monday, Gov. Ron DeSantis called on lawmakers to do something before the 2025 legislative session to address the crisis facing condominium owners. But Florida Rep. Vicki Lopez doesn’t feel the pressure of convening a special session on condos before the end of the calendar year. ‘When all 100% of condominium buildings complete their structural integrity reserve study, we’ll have a pretty good idea of what is the increase in the condo fees,’ Lopez said. ‘That’s what I don’t have right now.’ In the meantime, she still advises prospective buyers not to buy a condo in the state. ‘I feel like if the structural integrity reserve studies haven’t been completed, you don’t really know what you’re entering into when you purchase a condo. So I’ve actually said to everybody, you’ve got to make sure that you know what are all of the costs going to be,’ Lopez said.”

From CBS Miami. “One Brickell resident told CBS News Miami, away from our cameras, that he was upset that his neighbor of two decades could no longer afford to stay, overwhelmed by skyrocketing assessments and maintenance fees. He’s not alone in hoping something changes fast. ‘People are moving and moving away from this area of town,’ shared Shawn Cozzolino. Cozzolino tells us ever since he purchased his condo in Brickell four years ago, his association fees have gone up. ‘Add it all together, it’s like an extra $1,000 more a month,’ said Cozzolino. ‘For a lot of people, they can’t do that.’ Condo costs are rising for thousands in South Florida. ‘My brother and sister-in-law are on Brickell Key and they have had three special assessments, one per year over the last three years,’ said a Brickell resident who goes by Steve.”

“‘It’s way too cumbersome,’ said Craig Studnicky, ISG World’s CEO. ‘It’s way too much. It’s way too soon. Yes, it needs to be phased.’ Studnicky has worked in real estate for four decades, believing state laws negatively affected the condo market in South Florida for aging buildings. ‘It’s the uncertainty of it that has created the conclusion in every prospective buyer’s mind as well as lender’s mind that the special assessments will be six figures plus per unit,’ added Studnicky. ‘It is the opinion of a lot of realtors, and I agree with them, that if we just went back to 40-year recertification, we’re good.'”

Bloomberg on New York. “Developers of the Mandarin Oriental residences on New York’s Fifth Avenue secured an inventory loan to help with the cost of unsold luxury condos at the building. Manhattan-based Northwind Group provided a $120 million loan for the 50 remaining luxury condo units at 685 Fifth Ave., according to a statement. The project was built by New York-based developer SHVO and Deutsche Finance America, along with other equity partners including some of Germany’s largest pension and insurance fund managers. The group converted the building, formerly the headquarters of Gucci, into luxury condos with a rooftop pool, spa and gym. The project was completed earlier this year. Condo inventory loans can help developers pay the costs of holding onto those units while they try to strike deals. The Mandarin Oriental developers added more cash equity as part of this financing, bolstering Northwind’s bet on the property, according to the statement.”

Community Impact on Texas. “Single-family home sales decreased year over year by 8.3% from 8,006 in August 2023 to 7,240 in August 2024, according to the August market update released Sept. 11 from the Houston Association of Realtors. Active listings in Houston are at its highest since July 2011, with 30,841 single-family homes available, and active listings are up 34.6% from August 2023, according to the report. ‘Although sales have slowed, the Houston housing market is still in good shape,’ HAR Chair Thomas Mouton said via news release. ‘Expanding inventory and easing mortgage rates are offering buyers more opportunities.'”

KSAT in Texas. “Staggering rates of new deliveries hammering occupancy and rental prices in San Antonio’s apartment market are likely to persist through 2025. Since the beginning of the year, San Antonio has delivered a whopping 9,000 apartment units, according to MRI ApartmentData. Bruce Mcclenny, industry principal with MRI ApartmentData, expects another 6,000 deliveries before the year is out. While he says it might not be a record for San Antonio given the construction booms of the 1970s and 1980s, it’s certainly head and shoulders above numbers MRI has recorded for the Alamo City since it started tracking apartment unit growth. ‘We’re likely going to deliver way more apartment units than we’re going to be able to absorb this year,’ Mcclenny said.”

News 19 in South Carolina. “A Lexington County apartment complex, Westwood Estates, is in foreclosure after failing to repay its real estate company in time. According to court documents, Westwood Estates is facing foreclosure after allegedly breaching a loan agreement with 100 Riverbend, a real estate company. The complex reportedly borrowed over $24 million in 2021 and has failed to meet its repayment obligations. Mark Fessler, the deputy director for ligation and training with S.C. Appleseed Legal Services, said the real estate company has the right to reach this conclusion. ‘Practically speaking, you have to refinance the loan or get an extension from the lender, which the lender is not obligated to give, or you’d have to sell the property to someone else and use the proceeds from the sale to pay off the matured loan,’ he said.”

“Timothy Bridges, who has lived there for over two years, says he has experienced issues that inconvenienced him. ‘It’s one time I had to go to Planet Fitness to take shower because our water was cut off for so long,’ Bridges said. ‘It took them almost two years to a fix plumbing problem, and it was horrific,’ resident James Lewis said. ‘It was really horrific. I have holes in my bathroom walls and roaches are coming in. It’s really gross in there.'”

Colorado Springs Gazette. “A new Colorado law has lifted restrictions on how many unrelated people can live in one dwelling, causing concern and celebration among some Pikes Peak region officials and residents. House Bill 1007 went into effect July 1 and prohibits local governments from having restrictions on the number of people who can occupy a single dwelling, regardless of their connection to each other. The law allows for exceptions based on health and safety concerns. Dutch Schulz, president of the Old North End Neighborhood Association, said that he was concerned that the new legislation would allow density that would cause parking pressure on residential streets. ‘Where do they think these cars are going to go?’ he said.”

KATU in Oregon. “People in the North Portland neighborhood of University Park are on edge after they said crime is running rampant, and some blame a Safe Rest Village. KATU found some alarming data backing up that claim. It is happening as a neighbor showed a KATU crew surveillance video that shows someone seemingly breaking into a pickup truck at a home near the Peninsula Crossing Safe Rest Village. The homeowner told KATU the person stole several valuable items. Neighbors said they had similar experiences, although none wanted to talk on camera. They all said property crime has picked up since the tiny home community was built.”

“However, several others also said the area has gotten much cleaner, and they are seeing for less homeless camps in the area. ‘Since the city has put in the Safe Rest Village, things are honestly a lot better on this street. There used to be a massive tent city of more than a 150 tents up and down that bike path,’ said Brian Kim. ‘Now, that there is the Safe Rest Village, it’s all contained.’ Portland police data backs up the claim of crime running rampant in the University Park area. Between July 2023, shortly after the tiny home village opened, and July 2024, there were 923 property crimes reported. That is much higher than the 482 property crimes reported between July 2022 and July 2023.”

NBC San Diego in California. “It’s a good-looking piece of tuna that Tsuyoshi Maruyama is preparing for the evening’s dinner he will be serving his customers at Sushi Maru in downtown San Diego. He just bought the place a few months ago. He said business has been great since he opened, but there is a bit of an eyesore less than a block away: the vacant building at 101 Ash St. ‘Some homeless people hang out there. They should do something in there. It should be cleaner. It should be better,’ he said. Three new proposals are now on the table from different “entities” as the city called them. According to the mayor’s office, two of the proposals offered to turn the building into housing for low-income families. The third proposal offered to turn it into housing and support services for the homeless. ‘Hopefully, that could help our business as well, but I feel there should be people living there, and maybe there could be less homeless,’ Maruyama said.”

Global News in Canada. “An Ontario new homebuilding company is now facing 124 charges after the regulator found it was illegally building homes without permission. Albion Building Consultant Inc., also known as Albion Builders or simply Albion, had its licence to build and sell homes in Ontario revoked in February 2023. Over the winter, the Home Construction Regulatory Authority (HCRA) executed a search warrant at the company’s offices and seized thousands of company documents. At the time, the HCRA said it had reason to believe Albion was still building homes.”

“The regulator said that based on evidence obtained during the search warrant, it has laid 124 new charges against Albion and five business associates related to the construction of 40 new homes. The charges include illegal building and selling, failure to enrol homes, failure to comply with conditions and being a party to an offence. ‘It is the largest investigation in the HCRA’s history,’ the regulator noted. In addition to the charges, the HCRA is also seeking a restraining order to prevent Albion from further violating the law and endangering consumers. Albion is run by Zamal Hossain and his wife, Farida Haque. In 2022, the company was convicted of failing to enrol new homes in the warranty program with Tarion, as required by law. It was ordered to pay over $200,000 in fines for illegal building.”

“Hossain was individually convicted of acting as an officer in a company that failed to enrol new homes. Haque was individually convicted of acting as a vendor of a new home without being licensed. In February 2023, Global News showed up at Albion’s offices on Danforth Avenue in Toronto to locate Hossain, who agreed to do an interview with reporter Sean O’Shea. ‘Yes, I broke the law. Anything else?’ Hossain said. ‘One hundred per cent, I agree with that,’ Hossain said when asked about the requirement to register warranties.”

Daily Hive in Canada. “A Metro Vancouver home that has been listed for sale since April has caught the attention of some residents online, and it’s not because they love the aesthetic. Located at 3530 Hastings Street in Port Coquitlam, the five-bedroom, two-bath home with just over 2,600 sq ft of space was originally listed for $1,798,800.     “No ears were harmed. Carry on with your Sunday afternoon,” she wrote, apparently referencing the first attack on Trump’s life, which saw him sustain a head injury when gunman Thomas Matthew Crooks opened fire at a Pennsylvania rally in July, killing one spectator and wounding two others.

  4. This “kid” was a sophomore at my high school and played on the JV football team when I was a senior. For anyone who cares to read his obituary, what they don’t tell you is he only had one arm. He broke an arm as a child and it was set wrong, got Gangrene and had to be amputated. With that knowledge I think you will find his list of accomplishments pretty damn amazing.

They should be clean, have rules, security and offer pathways off the street. It’s past time ENFORCE NO CAMPING IN TENTS OR RV’s.     The individual in the interview incorrectly summed up status of the neighborhood. Illegal activity is not contained at the safe rest village. It is rampant all hours. This crime village was crammed in on a dead end road inviting rampant crime, destroying the livability of the neighborhood and virtually eliminating the use of the Peninsula Trail due to activity and tents on the trail. Not to mention 3 to 4 times a month we get Ambulance and Fire Engine service for overdoses. 32 years living here. Thanks Dan Ryan.

    Ryan Wesley Routh, 58, the alleged attempted assassin who was apprehended Sunday after trying to kill former President Donald Trump, reportedly had a Harris-Biden bumper sticker on a truck outside his home in Hawaii.

    The New York Post reported:

    The alleged gunman who targeted former President Trump had a Biden-Harris bumper sticker on the back of a pickup truck at his home in Kaaawa, Hawaii.

    Ryan Wesley Routh, 58, frequently posted about politics online and has exclusively donated to Democratic candidates and causes since 2019.

    Getty Images published a photograph of Routh’s home in which the truck, with the bumper sticker, are visible below.

    The attempted assassination against Trump was the second in just over two months. In the first attempt, the gunman, Thomas Matthew Crooks, had virtually no social media profile; in this case, Routh was a leftist who hated Trump and supported Kamala Harris.

    He was also obsessed with the Ukraine War — on the Ukrainian side — and was interviewed by the New York Times about his efforts to recruit volunteers to travel to Ukraine to fight against Russia in the war.

    Politicians across the spectrum condemned the attempted assassination, though the media continued Sunday to blame Trump, and not Democrats, for supposedly inflammatory rhetoric that, they said, were responsible for political violence. Not one media outlet examined its own rhetoric or that of Kamala Harris and the Democrats against Trump.

  9. In response to rising property crimes, my ‘hood held a meeting to discuss forming a neighborhood watch the other weekend. The prime movers behind this initiative are single libtard females who are feeling a growing sense of insecurity. I attended, but ruffled hen feathers when I explained that even though I am well trained and experienced in the use of firearms, as well as being physically imposing, I have no intention of coming to the assistance of any Democrat who is threatened by the criminal element, or of patrolling their properties. I explained that I refuse to protect members of a party out to nullify my 2nd Amendment rights and whose “hug-a-thug” criminal justice policies are undermining public safety. I made some instant friends with the more right-leaning members of the ‘hood, especially the conservative military guys & veterans, while the leftist harpies who expect guys like me to come to their rescue got a serious reality check.

    This is exactly why I post so much information about the real estate market these days, people need to be educated so they can make informed decisions.

    This situation was completely preventable but it happened due to a series of bad decisions based on shitty advice from real estate “professionals”.

    Late 2021:

    – purchased for $662k ($162k over asking).

    2022:

    – $150k in renos
    – fails to sell at $900k
    – fails to sell at $800k
    – fails to lease at $2650
    – fails to sell at $900k AGAIN
    – settled for a $1550 lease.

    Fast forward to 2024:

    – tries to increase lease to $2600 because they just got boned on their mortgage renewal, no bites.

    Now holding offers at $600k because they have no idea what it’s worth and they need to offload this bag.

    This is brutal, please educate yourself before making moves like this.

    There are much better ways to invest your cash and you always need to do your research and due diligence but if you insist on real estate you really need to do your homework.

  12. A couple hours outside Houston, in a remote field near a Dow Chemical Co. plant, America’s bid to undercut China’s grip on the global supply of rare earth minerals critical to high technology has yet to break ground.

    But while national security is a primary driver of the programs in the US and elsewhere, a slump in prices since 2022 is undermining the business case for those projects. That’s raising questions about whether this and similar efforts can develop into a supply chain to rival Chinese firms protected by their government.

    “These market conditions have now destroyed most of the hoped-for projects from just a couple years back,” said James Litinsky, the CEO of MP Materials Corp., which owns the only rare earths mine in the US and is building a factory to manufacture magnets in Texas.

    China’s Ministry of Natural Resources and its industry ministry didn’t respond to requests to explain their reason for raising mining quotas for rare earths in 2023 and 2024, which analysts says helped drive down prices.

    “Most rare earths mines are struggling to break even under low prices while early-stage projects face delays and funding shortfalls,” according to a Sept. 3 report in Benchmark Source. Those factors are “potentially slowing the West’s push to reduce dependence on Chinese supply chains,” it added.

  13. Warehouses across China are bulging with grain as a deepening economic crisis takes hold, leaving the world’s farmers to grapple with the prospect of a long-lasting slowdown gripping one of their largest customers.

    The strain across global markets is already showing. French barley exports to China have been tumbling and the US has yet to sell a full corn cargo for the new season. Wheat farmers in Australia are likely to be nervous as they prepare to start harvesting their new crop over the coming weeks.

    None of this will change soon, and the combination of an aging population and a cooling economy augurs poorly for the future. Traders and farmers will need to start adjusting to a very different demand outlook. Even if food security concerns keep imports robust for years to come, the meteoritic growth seen through the past two decades is likely over.

    “People are getting more pessimistic about the economy and demand,” said Ivy Li, a Shanghai-based commodity markets analyst at StoneX. “Importers will be very cautious, buying more slowly and doing more hand-to-mouth purchases. Impact from the collapse of confidence is all around.”

  14. France seeks extradition of another Canadian tied to EncroChat encrypted phone service

    French authorities are seeking to extradite another Canadian to face criminal charges in connection with encrypted phone service EncroChat, which was used by organized crime groups in Europe to avoid police surveillance, after having already apprehended the company’s alleged mastermind.

    A 38-year-old Canadian was arrested on July 9 in Zug, Switzerland, after France made the extradition request, according to a recent Swiss court decision. France has accused the man, who is identified only as “A” in the court file, of having operated the EncroChat system while knowing that the phones were mainly used to co-ordinate illegal activities. French authorities have alleged that EncroChat was used to facilitate drug trafficking, arms trading and money laundering, among other crimes.

    France’s extradition request to Switzerland is the latest in a series of similar actions by French authorities, who are taking an aggressive approach to curb the spread of harmful and illegal content online, including via encryption platforms, and to hold individual tech executives responsible.

    European authorities have said EncroChat phones were used nearly exclusively by organized crime groups to evade detection. The company provided ultrasecure Android phones that were distributed through a network of resellers across Canada and Europe for roughly €1,000 (about $1,510). A six-month subscription plan cost another €1,500 ($2,265).

    The phones were made to look like regular devices that run Google’s Android operating system. Users could enter a password that would allow them to switch over to the EncroChat operating system. Messages between EncroChat users were encrypted end-to-end and could be set to self-destruct after a period. The phones were stripped of their GPS functionality and had a “panic wipe” feature that allowed users to erase a phone’s contents by punching in a code.

    The French Gendarmerie Nationale began investigating EncroChat in 2017. By 2020, French authorities had infiltrated the company’s servers, which were housed in Roubaix, a city in northern France. The investigation has so far led to more than 6,500 arrests of EncroChat users and the seizure of large quantities of drugs and cash. Before it shut down, EncroChat had roughly 60,000 users.

  15. A New York City Department of Education manager and five other employees brought their own family to Disney World and on other excursions with city funds meant for homeless students, according to a report.

    The New York Post first reported that the Special Commissioner of Investigation (SCI) for New York City schools alleges the workers’ actions robbed disadvantaged children of the opportunity to go to the Magic Kingdom and on other trips to Washington, D.C., New Orleans, Boston, Rocking Horse Ranch Resort in upstate New York and Frost Valley YMCA campground between 2016 and 2019.

    Linda Wilson, the regional manager for the NYC Department of Education’s Queens Students in Temporary Housing, took her two daughters on city-funded excursions while encouraging her colleagues to do the same with their families, according to the SCI report released this month.

    While some students were brought on these trips, investigators alleged that spots were taken up by the employees’ family members. DOE rules state that employees cannot bring family on trips even if the DOE is reimbursed.

    Wilson allegedly skirted the rules by “forging permission slips in the names of students,” the report said. Wilson scheduled some of these trips under the belief that students would be visiting colleges, according to the report. Instead of visiting the schools, the investigation found that Wilson would take trips to other destinations.

    On one such trip in June 2018, Wilson allegedly went with students to visit Syracuse University. But the university said that Wilson never toured the school. The subsequent investigation alleged that Wilson instead took a detour to Niagara Falls.

    In 2018, Wilson learned that someone told others within the DOE of their actions, the report says, prompting her to cancel a visit to Philadelphia. She then allegedly told her colleagues, “What happens here stays with us.”

    Workers have blamed Wilson for telling staff that they could bring family on these trips, with one employee telling the Post that Wilson instructed them “to lie to investigators.” “She said everyone should stick to the same story that we did not take our children on the trip,” the employee said.

  16. Florida hospitals ask immigrants about their legal status. Texas will try it next

    For three days, the staff of an Orlando medical clinic encouraged a woman with abdominal pain who called the triage line to go to the hospital. She resisted, scared of a 2023 Florida law that required hospitals to ask whether a patient was in the U.S. with legal permission.

    The clinic had worked hard to explain the limits of the law, which was part of Gov. Ron DeSantis’ sweeping package of tighter immigration policies. The clinic posted signs and counseled patients: They could decline to answer the question and still receive care. Individual, identifying information wouldn’t be reported to the state.

    “We tried to explain this again and again and again, but the fear was real,” Grace Medical Home CEO Stephanie Garris said, adding the woman finally did go to an emergency room for treatment.

    Texas will be the next to try a similar law for hospitals enrolled in state health plans, Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program. It takes effect Nov. 1 — just before the end of a presidential election in which immigration is a key topic.

    “Texans should not have to shoulder the burden of financially supporting medical care for illegal immigrants,” Texas Republican Gov. Greg Abbott said in a statement announcing his mandate, which differs from Florida’s in that providers don’t have to tell patients their status won’t be shared with authorities.

  17. As Parliament resumes, Justin Trudeau has said that he can’t wait to get into it with Pierre Poilievre. In an exclusive interview with The Toronto Sun , Poilievre said there is a simple way for the two of them to mix it up.

    “Justin, if you want to mix it up, let’s call that carbon tax election, and let’s have a big choice for Canadians, a referendum, 61-cent-a-litre carbon tax under you, or axe the tax under Pierre Poilievre and the common-sense Conservatives,” Poilievre said.

    The Conservative leader has now called on all major party leaders to send Canadians to the voting booth as soon as possible. Looking at the polls, it’s no wonder: Poilievre’s Conservatives lead Trudeau’s Liberals by between 19 and 21 points, according to the three latest polls from Abacus, Ipsos and Leger.

    All three polls were taken after NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh ripped up his coalition deal with Trudeau.

    “He ripped up the coalition agreement, but then he taped it back together,” Poilievre said. “It’s really sad to see someone who claims to be this socialist, to be himself so greedy, you know, to put his $2.2 million pension ahead of the people who can’t afford to eat.”

    Singh qualifies for his pension after six years of service, which he passes on Feb. 25, 2025. While he won’t qualify for his pension until age 55, the lifetime value of it is estimated to be over $2 million once he does start to collect.

    Poilievre is not alone in speculating that the NDP leader wants to wait to call an election until after his pension is vested.

    Singh has refused to say if he will vote non-confidence against the Trudeau government. Instead, he’s tried to use his spotlight in the media since announce the split from Trudeau in painting the next election as a fight between himself and Poilievre.

  18. Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre signaled the Liberals’ carbon price and the economy will remain his prime target when Parliament resumes this week.

    He painted a dystopian picture during a Sunday morning speech to his caucus, saying the Liberal government’s plans to increase the price would cause a “nuclear winter” for the economy.

    “There would be mass hunger and malnutrition with a tax this high … our seniors would have to turn the heat down to 14 or 13 C just to make it through the winter,” Poilievre said. “Inflation would run rampant and people would not be able to leave their homes or drive anywhere.”

    In his speech Sunday, Poilievre took shots at both Trudeau and Singh. “This crazy carbon tax obsession of Justin Trudeau and the NDP is an existential threat to our economy and our way of life,” he said.

    Poilievre said despite the NDP pulling out of the supply-and-confidence agreement with the Liberals, Singh isn’t committing to voting to bring down the government and trigger an election.

    “Now on the eve of a byelection, sellout Jagmeet Singh wants you to believe he’s a changed man. He’s a totally new person. He’s forgotten about everything he’s been doing for two years.”

    As Parliament resumes on Monday, the political mood of the country will be tested in two byelections.

  19. German Conservatives Riding High Ahead of Candidate Decision

    Support for Germany’s opposition conservatives rose to the highest in more than three and a half years, according to a new poll, as the CDU/CSU alliance prepares to name its candidate to run against Chancellor Olaf Scholz in next September’s national election.

    The latest Insa survey for Bild am Sonntag newspaper put backing for the conservatives at 33%, up two percentage points from the previous week to the highest level since February 2021. The far-right Alternative for Germany is in second place, with 19% support.

    The three parties in Scholz’s ruling coalition — his Social Democrats (14%), the Greens (10%) and the Free Democrats (4%) — managed only 28% between them, the lowest combined total since they took office at the end of 2021. A new far-left party, the BSW, was level with the Greens at 10%.

    Voters have become increasingly frustrated with Scholz’s coalition and polls suggest that many don’t trust his government to lift Europe’s biggest economy out of stagnation or tackle issues like irregular migration.

    Immigration was one of the main issues in campaigning for two regional elections this month in which parties from the extreme right and left performed strongly.

    The AfD came first in the ballot in Thuringia and second in neighboring Saxony and is leading Scholz’s SPD in Brandenburg before the election there next Sunday.

    A Forschungsgruppe Wahlen poll for public broadcaster ZDF published Friday showed the anti-immigrant party at 29%, with the SPD, which currently runs the state, at 26%.

  20. Justin Trudeau’s sinking popularity puts him on shaky ground

    In his ninth year as prime minister, Trudeau’s approval rate has plummeted from 63% when he was first elected to 28% in June of this year, according to one poll tracker.

    This sinking popularity has already brought consequences to Trudeau’s governing Liberal Party. In a recent by-election, the party lost a Toronto federal seat that it had held for 30 years to the opposition Conservative Party – a major sign of trouble.

    On Monday, Trudeau and the Liberals face another set of tests – a crucial by-election in a Liberal stronghold in Montreal, Quebec, and the resumption of parliament, where Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre has vowed to table a motion of no-confidence as early as possible in an attempt to bring down the minority government.

    If Poilievre is successful, Canadians could head to the ballot box.

    And if current polls are any indication on how they might vote, the next federal election may mark the end of the Trudeau era.

    Darrell Bricker, a political scientist and pollster with Ipsos, compared the current moment in Canadian politics to this summer’s historic defeat of the UK Tories, who lost 251 seats in British parliament. “It’s basically over,” said Mr Bricker of Trudeau’s government in an interview with the BBC.

    “All that is happening is sands sliding out of the sand dial, and we’re working our way towards an inevitable conclusion.”

    It is a dramatic reversal of fortune for Trudeau, the son of former Prime Minister Pierre Elliott Trudeau, who was enthusiastically elected in 2015 by Canadians on a message of positivity, change and strengthening the middle class.

    In his first years as prime minister, Trudeau became a global progressive icon. He appeared in Vogue and on the cover of Rolling Stone, which carried the headline “Why Can’t He Be Our President?”

    But in recent years, especially in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic, Canadians say they have noticed a downward shift in their country. Homes are becoming unaffordable, grocery prices have skyrocketed, crime has become more visible, and Canada’s public healthcare system is struggling.

    In an August opinion piece published in Canada’s national newspaper the Globe and Mail, author and lawyer Omer Aziz wrote that the country is “witnessing a systemic political failure” and, more broadly, the decline of the “Canadian dream”.

    Mr Aziz, who previously worked as a policy advisor under Trudeau’s government, told the BBC that Canadians feel the prime minister has failed to deliver on his promises.

    He recalled the jubilation of Liberal supporters when Trudeau was first elected. “People were cheering on the streets, and I saw a new era,” he said.

    But after three terms under Trudeau, that progress “hasn’t come to pass,” Mr Aziz said.

    “There is a sense that political leaders, the prime minister and the government, have been unwilling or unable to respond to these concerns that have been building for a number of years,” he said.

    “People now are looking anywhere else for an alternative.”

    Following June’s by-election defeat in Toronto, Trudeau has faced pressure to quit from members of his own party.

    The Liberals’ campaign manager, Jeremy Broadhurst, later resigned in September, after reportedly telling Trudeau that he did not believe he could win the next election.

    The prime minister has held on, making various stops at events across the country this summer.

    At those appearances, Trudeau has presented his government’s solutions to Canada’s problems, like a plan to build nearly four million new homes by 2031 to increase the housing supply, or a cap on immigration to ease the stress on public resources.

    He has also sought to draw a sharp contrast between himself and his Conservative opponent, saying that his party believes in “investing in Canadians” while Poilievre wants to “cut programmes Canadians are relying on”.

    “That’s the choice that people are going to make next year,” Trudeau told reporters last week.

    None of this seems to have bought the Liberal Party and Trudeau any goodwill.

    The gap between the Liberals and the leading Conservatives among decided voters has grown wider since the beginning of this year, according to a number of opinion surveys.

    “I think people have made up their minds now, and anything that they’re doing now is too little, too late,” Mr Aziz said. “It should have been done years ago.”

  21. Man detained in apparent assassination attempt on Trump criticized former president on social media

    A 58-year-old man detained Sunday in connection with an apparent assassination attempt on Donald Trump in Florida is a self-employed affordable housing builder in Hawaii who went on social media to weigh in on politics and current events, at times criticizing the former president.

    Ryan Wesley Routh, who authorities suspect was planning to attack the former president as he played a round of golf, posted comments on an X account linked to him referencing the assassination attempt on Trump at a July rally in Pennsylvania.

    Routh tagged Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, in separate posts, encouraging them to visit those injured at the rally.

    “You and Biden should visit the injured people in the hospital from the Trump rally and attend the funeral of the murdered fireman. Trump will never do anything for them,” he wrote in a post directed at Harris.

    In an April post on X tagging President Biden’s presidential account, he wrote that Biden’s campaign should be: “called something like KADAF. Keep America democratic and free. Trumps should be MASA …make Americans slaves again master. DEMOCRACY is on the ballot and we cannot lose.”

  22. Burglar broke into 57 homes across San Mateo County, prosecutors say

    A 22-year-old East Palo Alto man is accused of breaking into a staggering number of San Francisco Bay Area homes and stealing $2 million worth of victims’ property.

    Francisco Antonio Cruz Ramirez appeared in a San Mateo County courtroom on Wednesday. He is charged with burglarizing 12 homes in South San Francisco, 12 in Belmont, three in Hillsborough, five in Foster City, seven in Burlingame, two in San Bruno, three in San Mateo, and 13 in unincorporated areas of the county.

    His older brother, 25-year-old Raul Ramirez Cruz, burglarized 13 houses, prosecutors said. The brothers’ alleged burglary spree happened between September of 2018 and May of 2019, according to the DA’s office.

    “The primary modus operandi (MO) was to make entry by shattering sliding glass doors and stealing from residences,” prosecutors wrote.

    Residents were inside five of the targeted houses when the home invaders broke in, the DA’s office said. In total, property valued at $2 million, including more than 100 firearms, was stolen.

  23. I’ve been reading here on and off since 2007, although I’ve only posted a few times. Thanks for all you do, Ben.

    I live in a fast growing suburb outside Raleigh. (The population has grown from about 17,000 in 2010 to 43,000+.) Our house cost $159k in 2011, and at the peak a similar house sold for $407k. Sales have slowed down this year, and one house took two months to sell. It had previously sold for $130k in 2013. It was listed in May for $360k. They dropped the price to $350k in July, and Zillow shows the final price at $345k.

    My point is that if sales are slowing here, they must really be slowing down in the northeastern states that everyone is trying to leave.

  24. My husband’s a programmer and the company he works for is trying to hire another one. In 2021 they only had about 20 people apply for the job, and none of them had experience in the language or type of work they were doing. It took over a year for the new employee to be trained enough to do any useful work. He left a while ago, so they posted a job opening a few weeks ago. This time they stopped accepting new applications after they received 850 in a few days.

    To help weed people out, the company had my husband design a programming test for applicants to take. It was a task that would only take an experienced person about ten minutes. About 75 out of 850 applicants completed the test. He began scoring the tests, and they invited the ones who looked like they might be competent to interview.

    They’ve had 17 interviews. One guy no-showed twice! 8 applicants had EXTREMELY bad English. 7 of these 8 had very American sounding names (first and last), yet were Asian. They are only interested in people in the US, to avoid international tax stuff, and it seems that these applicants lied about their location. Besides the English that wasn’t understandable, many of them had very long delays in answering questions, to the point that one of his coworkers wondered if they were feeding the questions asked into a translator.

    Of the remaining 8 candidates, one had zero programming experience, and one didn’t know the required language. One seems qualified but doesn’t seem to like programming, while another seems overqualified in a related field, so he’s worried the guy would leave quickly.

    I think the main takeaway from this is that they had over 40x the number of applicants compared to a few years ago. It looks like people are more desperate for jobs.

      The major companies I know of are spending their money on AI, not humans. I also know that lots of jobs get 1000+ resumes and it’s incredibly hard to find a job in the tech world…

        1. Thanks. I’m surprised you can’t find Ruby (for sure one can find JavaScript). It’s been a couple of years, but I don’t recall finding Ruby programmers to be difficult. I guess things move fast!

    2. I’ve been on the interview screening committee for my own organization.

      It’s very difficult to recruit individuals with the right mix of [software development] skill sets.

      But the bigger issue is critical thinking. A large fraction of the candidates we interview (with advanced degrees, no less), couldn’t puzzle their way out of a paper bag.

        His career experience was all in business. It was a simple screening tool because they were totally overwhelmed with applicants. Passing the test doesn’t mean a person is qualified, but failing it definitely means they aren’t.

          One time, I was rejected for a job within 10 minutes of my application. No way a human reviewed it, and yes, I was fully qualified. I also speak English, didn’t need sponsorship, live in the area, etc.

      I like to produce existing code, and let potential candidates discuss its weaknesses, and what improvements they suggest. It’s a great way to tease-out other projects they’ve worked on. FWIW, technical people are terrible at job interviews, but once relaxed you can draw them out, see if they’ll be a good fit.

    A man filmed two U.S. federal agents as they approached him to ask about posts he’d made on social media, leading to them being publicly shamed for targeting a First Amendment-protected activity.

    In a viral video, X user Jeremy Kauffman filmed as two plain-clothes agents approached his front porch requesting he not film them, as the citizen asked for their full names while notifying them he intended to post the interaction online.

    After appearing thoroughly embarrassed, the agents eventually departed while the man chided them, saying, “You know Americans that believe in the Constitution think you’re laughable. You go home and you think about what you did today. Go home and think about it. You coward.”

    It’s unclear what social media post prompted the visit.

    The interaction is being praised as a model for how citizens can assert their rights when confronted by federal agents, especially in cases of potential entrapment.
