The Cape Cod Times in Massachusetts. “As part of the bankruptcy proceedings of Yarmouth-based Levee Breaks Investment Group LLC, three properties will be abandoned, one property has been sold and four others are up forsale. LBIG used investor money to purchase Cape properties, remodel them and sell them or rent them at profits.”

Bailey on Jan. 12 approved trustee David Madoff’s motion for the authority to abandon two houses in Yarmouth and one lot in Dennis Port. ‘There was a lot of money invested and a lot of money not accounted for,’ Madoff said. ‘There have been a lot of suggestions by people as to where the money went, so we will start to look at that.'”

The South Florida Business Journal. “An affiliate of investment giant Blackstone sold the Mangrove Bay assisted living facility along the Intracoastal Waterway in Jupiter for $41.23 million, a significant discount from its last trade. BRE Rook SH Mangrove Bay LLC, in care of Blackstone in New York, sold the 155-unit assisted living facility at 110 Mangrove Bay Way. The price equated to $266,000 a unit. Mangrove Bay last traded for $71.9 million in 2017, so it sold for a considerable loss.”
The Marin Independent Journal in California. “The median price of a detached home in Marin was $1.49 million in December, a year-over-year increase of about 6%, according to the county assessor’s office. The price, while a gain, marked a drop-off from the double-digit increases over the summer, when the Marin median swelled as high as $1.8 million. The number of detached home sales in Marin was 170 in December, down 35% from the prior year, according to the county data.”

I buy ground beef at $5.50/lb and grill it into 1/2 lb patties for burgers. It’s cheaper than deli meat or Ronnie Mac’s and tastes better than both. That plus eggs at a few bucks per dozen and you can eat lots of high quality protein for cheap.
I do buy a bit of lean (93%) ground beef and cook with it. Organic chicken breasts at Sam’s Club are a little over $3/lb and come vacuum sealed which is handy for freezing them.
But sometimes you just want something nicer. USDA Prime grade steaks can be pricey, but it’s cheaper than grabbing burgers at Wendy’s.

There may have never been a worser time to buy…but don’t tell the people who are panicking over unaffordable, rapidly inflating rents.
My niece, who lives in Florida and does not have a high income, has it in her head that rapidly inflating rents are a buy signal. I tried to pass counsel her way through her mom (my sister), but it seems pointless. Even though what happened in 2007-2009 was about what posters here predicted, the Fed’s subsequent housing market intervention reinforced the widely held belief that real estate always goes up.
People think I’m a real estate crank, which is true. But that doesn’t mean my impression that there’s a great risk of another crash is wrong. There’s always another crash, though the exact timing can be hard to predict. Shoeshine girl moments like Millennials engaging in panic buying at the tail end of a boom is a sure sign we are on the glide path down the slippery slope.
I did the same thing regarding my niece before the last bust. She was buying a new home before selling the first and got stuck with both.

The US government bond market is signalling that the Federal Reserve will be able to tame inflation in coming years without snuffing out growth in the world’s biggest economy.
Treasury yields jumped last week after a much stronger than expected US jobs report, as investors bet that strength in the labour market would give the Fed further impetus to tighten monetary policy as it sought to rein in the most intense consumer price growth in almost 40 years.
Despite the upbeat figures on the labour market, which pointed to rising wage pressure, expectations for future inflation barely budged. A Treasury market measure known as break-evens indicated that inflation would recede to less than 3 per cent in five years. That would mark a significant fall from the 7 per cent rate recorded in December. Longer term break-even rates suggest that markets are expecting the Fed to succeed in pushing inflation back towards its 2 per cent target.
The rising yields, coupled with steady inflation expectations, have pushed returns bond investors can expect to earn after inflation is taken into account sharply higher since the end of last year. Analysts say this increase in so-called real yields indicates traders are expecting the US economy to continue expanding in the years to come even as policymakers withdraw stimulus measures to slow intense price growth.
The yield on 30-year Treasury Inflation-Protected Securities (Tips) — a proxy for the real yield on the 30-year Treasury bond — broke above zero on Friday for the first time since June 2021. It closed last year at minus 0.47 per cent, according to Bloomberg data.
“The Fed’s control over the economy has just increased,” said Robert Tipp, head of global bonds at PGIM Fixed Income.
