Higher interest rates have had a chilling effect on Canada’s housing market – prices are down nearly 15 per cent since they peaked in early 2022.

And that’s leaving buyers who purchased pre-construction homes a couple of years ago in an uncomfortable position.

Anne Gaviola has more on what homebuyers should keep in mind in an unpredictable market.

  2. Washington Post — U.S. warns Ukraine it faces a pivotal moment in war (2/13/2023):

“Despite promises to back Ukraine “as long as it takes,” Biden officials say recent aid packages from Congress and America’s allies represent Kyiv’s best chance to decisively change the course of the war. Many conservatives in the Republican-led House have vowed to pull back support, and Europe’s long-term appetite for funding the war effort remains unclear.

Biden and his aides are eager to avoid any sign of defection or weakening resolve by Western allies ahead of the Feb. 24 anniversary, hoping to signal to Russian President Vladimir Putin that support for Ukraine is not waning.

Last month, Zelensky’s top aide, Andriy Yermak, reiterated that victory against Russia means restoring Ukraine’s internationally recognized borders, “including Donbas and Crimea.” Anything less is “absolutely unacceptable,” he said at the World Economic Forum in Davos.

U.S. intelligence officials have concluded, however, that retaking the heavily fortified peninsula is beyond the capability of Ukraine’s army right now, according to officials familiar with the matter, speaking on the condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive issues. That sobering assessment has been reiterated to multiple committees on Capitol Hill over the last several weeks.”

LILLEY: Whoever replaces Tory needs to fix crime and Toronto’s filthy streets
    MSN|10 hours ago
As Toronto looks to elect a new mayor, one thing is clear: This time we have to discuss the many serious issues facing the city. Crime is at the top of the list but so, too, is the city’s out-of-control budget, the filth that covers so much of Toronto …

  4. Russia Today — The man behind the curtain: A new report exposes how George Soros’ propaganda machine has corrupted the media (2/14/2023):

“The extensive global influence of the Hungarian tycoon is well-known, and Soros himself has admitted it on countless occasions – including boasts about his efforts in Ukraine. Soros openly declared his role in promoting the 2014 US-orchestrated Maidan coup in Kiev, stating at the time: “I set up a foundation in Ukraine before Ukraine became independent of Russia [sic]. The foundation has been functioning ever since. And it played an important part in events now.”

The Newsbuster report identifies the hundreds of media, humanitarian, and social justice organizations that Soros funds annually and asserts that his donations allow him to “wield massive power over information in international politics,” and “mold public opinion on practically every continent and in many languages.”

The Poynter Institute is also at the top of this list, which Newsbusters condemns as “a global Soros-backed Ministry of Truth.” It received $492,000 during the same period. This money was used to finance Poynter’s International Fact-Checking Network, which brings together 100 so-called “fact-checkers”. The network includes the controversial PolitiFact, and actively works with major social media platforms to boost their operations, while censoring alternative voices and opinions.

However, Soros isn’t just funding content creators. His foundation supports a broad range of social justice activists, who often become media and online influencers. For example, in July 2021, he pledged $100 million to advance the cause of radical feminism worldwide over the next five years.

Organizations receiving cash secure major news coverage for events and activities they orchestrate on his dime, and influence public perception along the way. Soros has explicitly stated that his goal is to ensure “more women, transgender, and gender non-conforming people in positions of leadership in politics and governance,” are drawn from these recipients.

In 2020, Project Syndicate published an op-ed from economist Marianna Mazzucato. She argued that if Earth’s population were not prepared to accept a “green economic transformation” truly revolutionary in scope, with huge consequences for human rights and citizens’ daily lives, then the world should trial “climate lockdowns”, a completely new and untested concept in science, to counter global warming. Government responses to the COVID-19 pandemic were said to show they were possible.

“The world is approaching a tipping point on climate change, when protecting the future of civilization will require dramatic interventions. In the near future, the world may need to resort to lockdowns again – this time to tackle a climate emergency,” Mazzucato, whose research was funded by none other than Soros, insisted.

That same year, Soros told Italian newspaper La Repubblica that the COVID-19 pandemic was a “revolutionary moment when the range of possibilities is much greater than in normal times,” and “what is inconceivable in normal times becomes not only possible but actually happens” because “people are disoriented and scared.”

  5. Politico — West struggles to deliver on Zelenskyy’s defense wish list (2/13/2023):

“Ukraine is still waiting for promised deliveries of modern tanks. Combat jets, though much discussed, are mired in the throes of government hesitation.

On top of that, Kyiv is using thousands of rounds of ammunition per day — and Western production simply can’t keep up.

As members of the U.S.-led Ukraine Defense Contact Group gather in Brussels on Tuesday to coordinate arms assistance to Ukraine, they face pressure to expedite delivery and provide even more advanced capabilities to Ukrainian forces.

“It is clear that we are in a race of logistics,” NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg told reporters on Monday. “Key capabilities like ammunition, fuel, and spare parts must reach Ukraine before Russia can seize the initiative on the battlefield.”

So they can’t even supply the Ukes with ammo? What will NATO troops do if called to duty? Shout ‘bang, bang!’?

  6. The government of Canada’s second-most populated province is demanding that Mayor Eric Adams “immediately” stop helping migrants illegally enter the Great White North, as recently revealed by The Post.

“Any form of assistance to migrants crossing the border where it is strictly forbidden to do so should stop immediately,” a spokesperson for Quebec Premier Francois Legault said.

“We understand that the situation of migrants in New York poses major challenges, but the situation in Quebec and particularly in Montreal is even worse and constitutes an important humanitarian issue.”

Funny, how they could seal their border during Covid, but now they can’t.

  7. American Greatness — The U.S. Media Blackout on Ukraine (2/13/2023):

“While France and the United States are both democracies that ostensibly support freedom of speech, freedom of the press, and the right of popular dissent, there seems to be a startling difference in the application of these principles between the two nations. Specifically, Americans are under a near total media blackout regarding the Russian position on the Ukraine conflict, whereas the French, agree or pas, are at least hearing and seeing both sides of the debate and conflict.

While most French media tends to tout the official narrative of the macroniste government, which not surprisingly largely aligns with the United States and its marionette NATO allies, there is a remarkable willingness in public discourse to engage, hear out, and vigorously confront the other side of the argument.

Specifically, French news channels frequently invite senior Russian diplomatic and government administrative officials, as well as media commentators and other public figures, for discussions and debates about what is happening in Ukraine and why. These interviews are confrontational and often combative, never ingratiating or officious. The point is that they occur. What impresses me about the French approach is the openness of the often heated disputation. The viewer hears the arguments and can make up his or her own mind.

I’m not aware of any similar robust engagement in U.S. mainstream media with any Russian in any official government capacity or even private individuals, whether business leaders, media personalities, or academics. The exception, of course, is with those dissidents, exiles, and others who are prepared to denounce Putin and Russian nationalistic revanchism and rather affirm the U.S. narrative.”
